Jan 29, 2016 The ASUS Pro Gaming Guide recommends if using two DIMMs, insert one in DIMMA2 and one in DIMMB2. I have read several posts that indicate the Guide is incorrect and my experience has been to use lower numbered slots first, i.e. Other than trial and error, is there a way to tell which slots to use? I just upgraded the memory in my 2017 iMac and tests with Geekbench show that the modules should indeed be paired by DIMM slot, not by bank. The difference is significant too. With the same modules in different banks I get a memory bandwidth of 30 GB/s, with the modules in the same bank (but different DIMM slots) memory bandwidth drops to 16 GB/s.
Memory Slot In Motherboard
- The 27-inch iMac has four memory slots and comes with at least 8 GB of 2666 MHz DDR4 memory installed as two or more memory modules. You can install additional memory in the free slots or replace the memory in the filled slots with 4 GB, 8 GB, 16 GB, or 32 GB memory modules, for up to 128 GB of memory.
- While you can use mixed modules (size wise) I don't recommend using the same size from two different specs. Here is a good reference while it is on the older G5 series iMac it still applies today! Benefit of using matching memory modules (RAM). Remember your system has a 64/128-bit memory bus.
- Best Memory for 2020 iMac iMore 2020 While Apple charges a premium for memory (RAM) upgrades on all of its computers, one of the best aspects of the iMac line is that RAM is user-upgradeable. This means that you can skip Apple's in-house, expensive RAM upgrades and easily perform much more cost-effective ones yourself.

Apple continued to include an SDXC compliant, SDHC - SD backward compatible Secure Digital memory card slot on the slimmer aluminum iMac systems. This revision moved the slot the rear of the iMac alongside the audio, Gigabit ethernet, USB 3.0 and ThunderBolt ports instead of on the right-hand side of the display. The slot remains on the latest Thunderbolt 3 Retina iMac's as well.iMac SDXC Card | SDXC Card For iMacs | SDHC Card For iMac |
